Most reference checkers look at commas and italics. Esmond looks at something that matters more to a supervisor: whether the sources you cite actually carry the claims you make with them.
See how Esmond worksYour programme decides which referencing style you use, whether Harvard, APA, OSCOLA, Vancouver or another. Esmond does not question that choice and does not mark you on punctuation. Tools built into your reference manager handle formatting well.
What Esmond reads for is how sources work in your argument.
A reference list in perfect style can still hide a weak argument. If an essential claim rests on a blog post, an old textbook or a single small study, a careful examiner will notice, and the formatting will not help. Equally, a statistic quoted without a source, or a policy described from a news summary rather than the document itself, invites questions about everything around it.
Students often realise this only when they go back to an early chapter and find a claim they can no longer trace. Esmond points to those sentences so you can check them against your notes before someone else does.
Esmond does not open the publications you cite. It cannot confirm that a page number is correct or that a quote is exact. It reads your text and shows where the link between claim and source looks weak, so you know where to go back to the original.
You upload your draft as a PDF. Short documents come back within minutes; a full dissertation takes longer. You get two things back: your own document with comments in the margin, and a separate feedback report that sets out what to tackle first. Every upload starts with a free preview, and the price follows the length of your document and is shown before you pay. No subscription, no account.
Esmond evaluates your work and writes nothing for you. Each comment points to a passage, explains what a supervisor or examiner might question, and gives a direction for revising it. You decide what to change, and every sentence stays yours.

No. It does not edit your bibliography or reformat citations. It points to places where the support for a claim looks thin.
