Many students search for proofreading when what worries them is whether the argument holds. Esmond is not a proofreader. It gives feedback on content, and it never edits your text.
See how Esmond worksProofreading catches surface errors: spelling, grammar, punctuation, inconsistent formatting. Changes to argument, structure or content by someone else are a different matter, and can cross into academic misconduct.
If you are thinking about using a proofreader, check what your institution allows first.
Content feedback looks at the substance: whether your question is answered, whether chapters connect, whether claims match evidence, whether sources support what you say. It tells you where and why, and leaves the revision to you. That is what a supervisor does in a meeting, and what Esmond does in a written report.
Since 2019 Irish law, through the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) (Amendment) Act, makes it an offence to provide or advertise services that complete assessed work for students (see contract cheating and Irish law). Esmond is built on the opposite principle: it evaluates the work you wrote and does not do that work for you. Every sentence in your dissertation stays yours.
Be straight with yourself: Esmond works with language models, so using it is a form of AI use. Rules on AI differ per university, programme, module and assignment. Check your module or programme handbook before you upload, and if it is unclear, ask your supervisor or module coordinator and declare the use if your institution asks you to.
You upload your draft as a PDF. Short documents come back within minutes; a full dissertation takes longer. You get two things back: your own document with comments in the margin, and a separate feedback report that sets out what to tackle first. Every upload starts with a free preview, and the price follows the length of your document and is shown before you pay. No subscription, no account.
Esmond evaluates your work and writes nothing for you. Each comment points to a passage, explains what a supervisor or examiner might question, and gives a direction for revising it. You decide what to change, and every sentence stays yours.

They do different jobs. Check your institution's rules on proofreading first. Esmond only gives feedback on content.
No. It is a list of comments on your own text and a report for you. It does not do your work for you.
